Education
Educate A Child (EAC) is a global program of the Nigeria Youth Congress Osun state chapter Above All organization projects that was launched in 2022 with the aim of making significant differences in the lives of children who have no access to primary education 1. Through partnership and innovation, EAC has helped thousands of out-of-school children (OOSC) all over the state overcome the access and retention barriers blocking their path to education 1. By playing a leadership role in the field of OOSC and quality primary education, EAC strives to achieve individual and social outcomes for these children and their communities, resulting in a more sustainable world for everyone 1. EAC has helped enroll more than 10.4 million out-of-school children into quality primary education 1.
In addition, NYC has led a consortium of national and international organizations across the state that have partnered with EAC to implement the Programme, or Access to Education for All Children in Osun state project. NYC is working to ensure access to quality education for nearly 500,000 vulnerable out-of-school children in the state through alternative educational strategies, such as mobile schools for children in nomadic communities and accelerated-learning programs for older students. In addition, this joint project supports teacher training, the provision of instructional materials, parental engagement, and improved school management capacity .
Health care
Pad Up a Girl Campaign is an initiative that aims to provide free sanitary pad kits and training young women on how to use sanitary pads 1. The campaign is aimed at building up the confidence of school girls as women, who are forced to miss out on school (3-5 days) when they menstruate because they can’t afford sanitary towels during their period 1. The program also provides interactive educational sessions on puberty, menstruation, personal hygiene, sexual health, and STIs during each training 1. The initiative is envisioned to eradicate menstrual poverty amongst poor and vulnerable girls in Nigeria, by creating easy access to sanitary pads that are reusable, affordable and eco-friendly 2. The program has been successful in empowering vulnerable girls through the provision of reusable pads and capacity building on menstrual hygiene management and reproductive health for improved performance and self-esteem .
Awareness
The project is designed to help sensitize and train students and youths about the side effects of specific drug or all substance abuse and share their learned knowledge with the community and populace. The project aims to locate anti-drug sources and fact-based information 1. The project offers several options for sharing the research, including PowerPoint presentations, bookmarks, and teacher-led discussions 1. 1. The project provides some great reference examples such as theantidrug.com, abovetheinfluence.com, justthinktwice.com, and drugabuse.gov/NIDAHome.html1
Leadership
Youth leadership positioning and capacity building is a crucial aspect of youth development. It involves building the capacity of young people to take on leadership roles in their communities and beyond 1. The Commonwealth Education Hub provides a comprehensive guide on working with youth-led organizations (YLOs) and the roles and responsibilities of youth workers in building the capacity of YLOs in areas of facilitation, advocacy, networking, and leadership 1. The project also examines the impact of youth leadership and youth organizing on communities and how it shapes young people’s social-emotional and academic development, well-being, and civic engagement 2. The Nigeria Youth Congress through the ministry of Youth and sports has developed a module on youth leadership and participation that provides guidance on planning and implementing youth leadership and participation activities
